So, Swim Creative is doing a Vine-off, to test the skills of their potential summer interns. I figured out, woops, I don't have Vine, when I pulled my un-smartphone out of my pocket. So, I looked at my pictures for the millionth time and listened to all of my ringtones, just to lighten the mood. A guy's gotta feel good about his prowess in technology, right? Don't worry, I know how to work the latest iPad, Kindle or what have you. If my three year old nephew can, I better!
Anyways, I lost my job a month ago (already a month?!), and can't afford to freeload off of my own bank account anymore. I am doing the dreaded college-grad-moves-into-Mom-and-Dad's basement thing.. for now. I think Duluth is unreal, and want to come back. Or the cities. And that idea of moving somewhere far away just for fun hasn't gone out the window yet, either.
After four and a half years in one house, one bedroom, one city, you realize you don't really want to go. The packing alone is ridiculous enough to just stay put. But here I am cleaning up, organizing, throwing out junk, all the while discovering the odds and ends of the past four years hiding in the boxes and folders and envelopes scattered about the house. Half of it I wonder, why do I still have this?!
Taking pictures is my Vine, of sorts. I'm always more intrigued in the still visual. No trickery or noise, just a memory that captures a moment in time, leaving the story up to the imagination. As I dug through what will probably be thrown away, I thought about what really happened during college. It happened, I hardly remember it, and yet I know a heck of a lot more!

Ever since obtaining my first computer, I continue to be amazed by technology and the platform it gives me to express my creativity. I want to continue developing my design skills on and off the computer in a real-life, professional environment. On a scale of #coolfind to #whydoIstillhavethis, this box would be way over on the #whydoIstillhavethis side. I am a bit of a memory-keeper aka hoarder.

I wonder how many people can say, "I had no idea where I was gonna go to college, or what I wanted to do, but somehow I did myself proud. All of this on my own dollar and confidence to succeed!" I am grateful for the small-town feel of Mountain Iron-Buhl High School and the outdoors appeal of the University of Minnesota-Duluth. An all-around #education, for sure.

This, here, is four years-worth of The Statesman. It is proof that I went to UMD. Or maybe it proves that I am just a hoarder. Don't worry, they have moved from the corner of my closet to the recycling! Though, it was fun to go through them again and find the news-worthy elements that made my undergrad a great experience.

I look back on my first "real" branding project from school, and I wonder why I didn't push myself further. The potential is always there for something better. Is a design ever complete and perfect, really? From my #experiences in college, freelance and my first job, there is no finished project. It is always evolving, ever-changing in my mind, keeping me curious as to what it can be, if I just work a little harder. The only reason we push projects to completion is because of the dreaded deadline, but that can't hold us back from exploring every angle. From freshman year to my senior portfolio, I am proud of what has been accomplished. We can always wish for more money, more time, more resources, and it is our positive attitude that will make those wishes come true.

A mad #skill I have is finding myself super involved in everything I do. It is that good dose of stress that really makes a memory become a special one. For example, an normal weekend gathering with a bunch of friends + some last minute soda, gold spray paint and a Sharpie = we can all feel like celebrities at our own level. The annual FALCies Awards held during our annual DKW ("Dee-Kay-Dubs") weekend are born. You may be confused. Don't worry, its a church thing. A normal church thing turned super awesome corny. Oh, skills. Super sarcasm. Photoshop. InDesign. Being social. #hashtagsocialmedia. Wanna-be illustrator.

Also, my Freshman drawing class solidified my fear of the pencil, but opened my eyes to the creative field. It isn't all just black and white, there are many shades of grey. From lovely clients to computer issues to a so-so design, I take it on, face it in real time and try find a way to fix it. Everyone has their opinion, but only a few make it their profession.

#WhySwim, you ask? a) Duluth b) I think I'm a pretty awesome person c) Just Because Like the memories documented in the guest logs at the house, I want to discover and document the life of Swim. A small town creative that is a still-developing, credible resource for those that have a yearning to reach their consumers in a unique way. A way that will help them stay afloat. Swim is their life jacket. When they learn how to Swim, they will rise above the waves and shine. Now that is corny. Corny good. Now, back to cleaning and packing and reminiscing.
